Napier, Lord (1810-1890) acting Governor General and
Viceroy of India on the assassination of Lord mayo.
Until a successor to the murdered viceroy could be appointed in England,
Lord Napier was sent from Madras to act as Governor General. He acted
as Governor General from 21 November to 2 December 1863. Son of Major
Charles Frederick Napier and born in Ceylon, Lord Napier joined the Bengal
Engineers in 1828. Later he joined the Bombay army. He commanded the Abyssinian
expedition in 1867-68. In his military career Napier rose to be commander-in-chief
of the Indian army (1870-76) and Field Marshall (1883).
