Ghaznavi, Abdul Halim (1879-1956) a politician, philanthropist
and a zamindar, he was the younger brother of more famous abdul
karim ghaznavi. Born in 1879 at Dilduar in the district of
Tangail, he was educated abroad. He took active part in political, economic
and educational movements of British Bengal. Abdul Halim Ghaznavi was
a straightforward man and for that reason the British Government did not
like him. He was a member of the indian
national congress but because of differences of opinion with
the Congress leaders, he resigned from the body after the Surat Conference
in 1906. He took active part in the khilafat
movement and presided over a large meeting in Tangail on the
occasion of the Second Khilafat Day observed throughout Bengal on 19 March
1920.
Ghaznavi was a member of the Indian Legislative Council for about
two decades from 1926-1945. He was elected President of the All
India Muslim Conference in 1929. Ghaznavi was a member of the
delegation to the Round Table Conferences during 1930-32. He was
a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee and strongly supported
the idea of a
separate electorate system for Muslims. He became the
Chairman of the Chamber of Merchants and also the Sheriff of Calcutta
for some time. Ghaznavi breathed his last in 1956.
